SAN DIEGO’S WELLNESS SPECIALIST DISCUSSES THE NEED FOR SCREENING FOR ATHLETES OF ALL AGES AS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE FOR INJURIES.

The incidence of injuries in sports continues to increase and the average age when these injuries occur has decreased from ten to the tender age of eight. In the past several years, this number continues to decrease translating to the fact that athletes are suffering from injuries at earlier ages. The good news that we can be proactive and directly have a positive impact on the prevalence of these sports-related injuries. In order to accomplish this goal, we need to start with the screening our athletes by identifying dysfunctional versus functional movement patterns. There is a direct correlation between dysfunctional/compensatory movement patterns and the probability of injuries.

One of the “Gold Standards” for athletic screening is called the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). It is a series of 7 movement patterns that most are somewhat familiar with; and the ability to perform these movements is rated on a scale of 1-3. One of the major benefits is that this screening tool can be repeated and replicated (in a relatively short amount of time) bi-weekly or monthly to compare to the initial baseline of function (which would reveal improvements in one or more areas).

Recently, Dr. Deniz Armagan was joined by Mr. Wade Taylor, his client and the owner of Wsradio on his podcast, “Performance In Motion”  where they discussed factors that influence the probability of injuries in athletes, action steps that parents can take to start their kids on the right path; and debilitating athletic injuries and solutions that Dr. Deniz has experienced.
